Girdwood lies in a small valley in the Chugach mountains and is a community with the Municipality of Anchorage located about 30 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska along the Seward Highway. It is on Turnagain Arm, a fjord carved by glaciers and known for its dramatic bore tides, which can be 6 feet high. It is also home to Alaska's largest ski area, the Alyeska Resort, which was home to the 2007 U.S. Alpine Ski Championships. Summer activities include hiking, fishing and rafting. The Girdwood Forest Fair is held every July and the Alyeska Blueberry and Mountain Arts Festival is held the second Saturday in August, featuring local artists, live music and the Classic Alyeska Mountain Run.
